Wildlife Winter Adventures

Why Winter is the Best Time to Visit Phillip Island

When people think of Phillip Island, summer often comes to mind. But ask the locals, and they’ll tell you a little secret—winter is one of the most magical times to visit.

With fewer crowds, peaceful beaches, cosy cafés, incredible wildlife encounters and crisp coastal walks, winter offers a completely different side of Phillip Island. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing weekend away or a family adventure, there’s plenty to discover during the quieter months.

Enjoy Phillip Island Without the Crowds

One of the biggest advantages of travelling during winter is having more space to yourself.

Take a stroll along Cowes Beach, explore the scenic coastal walking tracks, or simply enjoy watching the waves roll in without the busy summer crowds. Attractions are more relaxed, parking is easier, and you’ll have more time to soak up everything the Island has to offer.

At Anchor Belle Holiday Park, you’ll also enjoy a quieter atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind and recharge.

Discover Amazing Wildlife

Winter is one of the best seasons for wildlife lovers.
Winter is also a special time for one of Phillip Island’s most iconic locals—the Cape Barren Goose.

At this time of year, you’ll often spot fluffy goslings (baby geese) following closely behind their parents as they explore the Island’s parks, reserves and open grasslands. It’s one of the most heartwarming sights of winter, so be sure to keep your camera handy!

Cape Barren Geese are one of the world’s rarest goose species and are found almost exclusively in southern Australia. Phillip Island is one of the best places to see them up close in their natural habitat.

A few fun facts about these fascinating birds:

❤️ They’re known to form strong lifelong pair bonds, with many mating for life.

🪿 They are one of the few goose species that spend most of their time grazing on grass rather than swimming.

🐣 Winter is breeding season, which means you’ll often see adorable goslings from June through to August.

🌿 Both mum and dad share the responsibility of protecting and raising their young.

🦴 Their distinctive greenish-yellow legs and striking spotted grey feathers make them easy to recognise.

Phillip Island is famous for its Little Penguins, who continue their nightly Penguin Parade throughout winter. The cooler evenings often make for an even more memorable experience as the penguins waddle ashore after a day at sea.

It’s also whale season! Between May and October, Humpback and Southern Right Whales migrate along Victoria’s coastline. Keep an eye out from The Nobbies, Pyramid Rock or Cape Woolamai—you may be lucky enough to spot a whale breaching offshore.

Don’t forget to visit the Koala Conservation Reserve, Phillip Island Wildlife Park or take a Wildlife Coast Cruises tour for even more unforgettable encounters.

Perfect Weather for Cosy Adventures

Winter doesn’t mean staying indoors all day.

Pull on a warm jacket and enjoy some of Phillip Island’s spectacular coastal walks. Explore Cape Woolamai, the George Bass Coastal Walk or the Nobbies Boardwalk while breathing in the fresh sea air.

When you’re ready to warm up, stop by one of the Island’s welcoming cafés for a hot chocolate or coffee, or enjoy lunch overlooking the water.

Plenty to Do on Rainy Days

If the weather decides to keep you indoors, there’s still plenty of fun waiting.

Spend the day at Phillip Island Tenpin Bowling & Entertainment Centre, where you’ll find bowling, laser tag, arcade games, pool tables and golf simulators.

Challenge yourself at Clip ‘n Climb, browse the local shops in Cowes, or relax with a leisurely lunch at one of the Island’s many fantastic restaurants.

Winter is the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy everything at your own pace.

Warm Up with Local Food & Wine

Cooler weather is made for long lunches and local flavours.

Visit Phillip Island Winery for delicious seasonal meals and locally produced wines, enjoy handcrafted wines at Purple Hen Winery, or pick up some incredible local cheeses from Bassine Specialty Cheeses before returning to your accommodation for a relaxing evening.

It’s the perfect way to experience some of the best produce Bass Coast has to offer.
